Though some people even consider him not truly evil, but Ravana surely was the most iconic antagonist ever mentioned in our stories. Surpassing all other demons and villains of all other epochs, he stands out due to his vicious deeds.
- Murdered his brother-in-law: On his way to conquering heaven, he faced his brother-in-law Kalkeya, and taken over by ambition, murdered him brutally. It was Kalkeya’s wife, Ravana’s sister Surpanakha who set him up against Rama to ensure his downfall.
- Brutalized Saints: Ravana was known to have tortured and murdered several saints who peacefully meditated on his kingdom grounds. This was due to his hatred for lord Vishnu, whose believed incarnation Rama ultimately defeated him.
- Mistreated women: He tormented innumerable women only for his lust. He had famously kidnapped Sita, the ‘apsara’ Rambha, a poor Brahmin lady Vedavati, and several others. Vedavati cursed Ravana that a woman will become the reason of his fall.
- Greedy beyond measure: Ravana conquered the throne of Indra and stole the entire treasury of Devas from his brother Kubera to build his empire Lanka as the most glorious ever.
- Proud as hell: Having seen defeat at the hands of King Bali, Monkey-King Baali, King Arjuna, Lord Shiva and many others, Ravana still considered himself the mightiest and immortal. Thus he fought the exiled prince Rama and his army of monkeys, only to see defeat at the hands of the supposedly weakest opposition ever.
Several other sins decorated the vile history of this demon-king. He truly remains unparalleled in his villainy.
